Flatland

When the 3-Dimention encounters the 2-Dimention

This project aims to play with the consciousness between 2D and 3D worlds. Some features only exist in the 3D world, such as height, volume, or shadow. How would these features be translated in the 2D world?  Starting from exploring the boundary between 2D and the 3D world, this project ended up developing a new design process to create a geometry constructed by spatial skeletons. It would be hard to design such complex geometry manually without the help of computational tools.

Dynamic Intersection Between 2D & 3D

When the 3D object passes through flatland, it leaves its section on the plane. Each section can vary significantly as the 3D object is always changing its position. Similarly, the 2D surface could also actively intersect with a 3D object by bending or moving, which would leave 2D sections scattered around the 3D space.

Bouncing & Moving Intersection

Another approach is to intersect 3D objects with the plane in order to get the ‘sections’. I applied two movements to the 3D object: one is bouncing, while the other is rotating. When the 3D object passes through flatland, it leaves its section on the plane. Each section can vary significantly as the 3D object is always changing its position. Similarly, the flatland could also actively intersect with a 3D object by bending or moving, which would leave 2D sections scattered around the 3D space.

Shadow

One of obvious features that a 3D object has but a 2D shape doesn't is the ‘shadow’. The size of the shadow could change dynamically when the 3D object is approaching or leaving the plane. From the Flatland dwellers' perspective, the shadow is a just a 2D shape that mysteriously changes size. They do not understand that the size changes because of the distance between 3D geometry and the plane.
